12 Mar Prince George air group regrets not testing. An air-monitoring group has apologized to Prince George, B.C., residents for failing to retest for levels of a known carcinogen in their air, but they still can't explain why the retesting was never done. Formaldehyde was found in the air at 18 times the acceptable level in one neighbourhood. CBC Canada.

12 Mar Researchers gain new insights into the mystery of thalidomide-caused birth defects. Half a century ago, thousands of pregnant women in 46 countries took a drug for morning sickness that would later be discovered to cause severe malformations in developing fetuses. Scientific American.

12 Mar The Pill 'cuts cancer risk and prolongs life.' Taking the contraceptive pill can help women live longer and reduce their risk of serious diseases, according to a major new study by Scottish researchers. Edinburgh Scotsman.

12 Mar Pollution fears stop Thailand's industrial heart. Legal action brought by environmental activists has brought dozens of projects to a halt until pollution fears have been addressed, seizing up nine billion dollars of investment and damaging the country's image. Agence France-Presse.

12 Mar UB toenail study: No alarm on arsenic levels. Arsenic levels detected in the toenail clippings of children living in the Victorian Goldfields are not alarming, but suggest that people should not be complacent, according to researchers. Ballarat Courier.

Initiative on
Children's Environmental Health

The Initiative on Children's Environmental Health – formerly the Institute for Children's Environmental Health – is now an active working group of the Collaborative on Health and the Environment. ICEH is devoted to the promotion of children's health and the prevention of environmental exposures and other factors that may undermine healthy development.

Conference Highlights: Translating Science to Policy: Protecting Children's Environmental Health.
This document from the Columbia Center for Children's Environmental Health summarizes the March 2009 symposium which reviewed 10 years of research findings from the Center and other scientists, discussed interventions stemming from this research, and identified strategies to advance policies that will reduce and prevent environmentally-related diseases such as asthma, developmental disorders and cancer in children living in urban communities. New Resource: Climate Change and Children's Health, December 2009. With several recent reports and statements regarding the impact of climate change on health, the Initiative on Children's Environmental Health is pleased to provide a new resource page on Climate Change and Children's Health. This page lays out why children are especially vulnerable, what health impacts may be caused or exacerbated by climate change, and actions that we can take as individuals and as groups. A resources section also links to additional information. This new resource will be updated as new information becomes available.

ICEH Merges with CHE, May 2009. The Institute for Children's Environmental Health has become a working group of CHE and moved its resource-rich website onto the CHE site. Now the Initiative on Children's Environmental Health, ICEH will continue to provide resources and services, including the email bulletins that it had been publishing for the Partnership for Children's Environmental Health.
