Toxipedia
Toxipedia was founded in 2006 by Steve G. Gilbert, PhD, DABT. Dr. Gilbert created this site as a free toxicology encyclopedia offering articles and resources about toxic chemicals, health conditions, ethical considerations, the history of toxicology, laws and regulation, teaching materials and PowerPoint presentations. This diverse material was gathered under the organizing principle that toxicological information is best understood and acted upon when scientific information is placed in the context of history, society and culture.
Some of the first authors were Sean Foley, Rick Gleason, Todd Stedeford, Scott Jordan, Hardy Limeback and Heather Gingerich. Over 2000 people signed up to receive Toxipedia’s monthly newsletter and daily tweets of historical highlights, and every month tens of thousands of people have visited the site for its variety of well researched and science-based resources.
Early in 2016, Dr. Gilbert and CHE agreed to have Toxipedia merge with CHE to further enrich CHE’s online content. We are incorporating the wealth of resources from Toxipedia into our web pages. To recognize the contributions of Toxipedia and its authors, you will find Toxipedia’s logo every time their resources were used or adapted for CHE’s purposes. We extend our deep gratitude to Dr. Gilbert and Toxipedia’s other dedicated contributors for diligently working to raise awareness not only about toxic chemicals and their impacts on health, but also why we need to care about these issues and what we can do to ensure all children have a chance to reach their fullest potential.
Toxipedia is especially well known for two resources,
- A free e-book, A Small Dose of Toxicology
- An interactive poster, Milestones in Toxicology.
Both are available in several languages. These resources can be downloaded at these locations:
A Small Dose of Toxicology: The Health Effects of Common Chemicals, 2nd Edition by Steven G. Gilbert explores the principles of toxicology by examining the health effects of common chemical agents. This edition is available only as an e-book and can be viewed in English (free), German (free), Arabic (free) and Chinese (small fee). | |
Milestones in Toxicology. This poster presentation examines the development of the discipline of toxicology and its influence on civilization by highlighting significant milestones and discoveries related to toxicology. |
CHE has incorporated much of the information and resources previously found on Toxipedia.org into our site. We have also chosen to carry forward some of Toxipedia's original resources in PDF form. These documents are listed in the Dig Deeper sidebar on webpages.
